UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center

$17,000,000

The University of New Mexico Cancer Center, The Official Cancer Center of the State of New Mexico, is a world-renowned leader in cancer research and cancer treatment. It is New Mexico’s largest team of cancer specialists, with over 60 world-class cancer physicians and 110 research scientists and is one of the nation’s 60 premier National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Cancer Centers. Today, the UNM Cancer Center provides cancer diagnosis and treatment to over 40 percent of the adults and virtually all of the children diagnosed with cancer each year in New Mexico. While 52 percent of these patients come from Bernalillo County, 48 percent travel to Albuquerque from every county in New Mexico and from many other states to receive world-class cancer treatment. The only problem is that the Cancer Center has completely outgrown its existing facilities.

The funding in Bond C will be used to plan, design, construct, equip and furnish the next phase of the Cancer Center.

When it opens on February 1, 2009, UNM’s new Cancer Center will triple the current capacity and will provide enough expansion space to serve patients for many years. Combined with its statewide cancer network, this new center will finally allow UNM to reach out to New Mexicans all across the state and give them access to the world-class cancer treatment they deserve, right here at home, surrounded by the people and places they love. The new facility has been designed to be a gracious environment of hope, comfort, and safety where cancer patients and their families will feel at ease while getting the most advanced cancer care possible.
