Valencia – Automotive and Welding Technology Center
Project Description
This project will transform an existing UNM–Valencia facility into a dedicated Automotive and Welding Technology Center, expanding opportunities for students to gain the hands-on skills and industry experience needed to enter high-demand skilled-trade careers.
The renovation will create four classrooms, two faculty offices, dedicated simulation labs, a welding laboratory with multiple training bays, and an automotive laboratory equipped with vehicle lifts and industry-standard equipment. The project will also upgrade HVAC and ventilation systems, waste management systems, restrooms, site access, safety features, and building security to support modern technical instruction.
By repurposing an existing facility, UNM–Valencia can create a specialized workforce training center while making efficient use of existing campus resources. The new center will provide Automotive Technology and Welding students with dedicated classrooms, laboratories, and simulation environments designed around the type of hands-on training they will encounter in the workplace.
The project will allow UNM–Valencia to expand technical education and respond to growing interest from employers and industry partners seeking a skilled workforce. Increased instructional capacity will create more opportunities for students to pursue technical certificates and degrees while strengthening pathways from the classroom to employment.
For students, the center will provide access to practical, career-focused education and training close to home. For employers and the surrounding community, it will help build a stronger pipeline of workers prepared with relevant, industry-aligned skills.
By investing in the Automotive and Welding Technology Center, GO Bond 3 will help UNM–Valencia prepare more students for skilled-trade careers, support local employers, and strengthen the workforce and economy of Valencia County and the surrounding region.
Additional Background
UNM–Valencia's existing facility was not designed for automotive and welding instruction and lacks the specialized laboratories, equipment, ventilation, and simulation spaces required for modern technical education.
At the same time, the campus has seen growing interest from local employers and industry partners seeking training opportunities in welding, automotive technology, and other skilled trades. Meeting that need requires instructional facilities where students can gain practical experience using equipment and working in environments that reflect current industry practices.
Renovating the existing facility will provide the infrastructure needed to grow these programs while helping UNM–Valencia recruit, retain, and graduate students pursuing technical careers. The center will strengthen connections among education, industry, and employment while creating additional opportunities for students to develop skills that can lead directly to jobs in their communities.
